Tomaso Buzzi for Venini Floor Lamp in Glass and Gold Leaf

Sale price$27,000.00

Tomaso Buzzi for Venini, floor lamp, model '502', glass, brass, gold leaf, Italy, 1933-38

A truly magnificent Italian floor lamp designed by the Milanese multidisciplinary artist Tomasso Buzzi (1900-1981) for the esteemed glass company Venini. With regard to its essential form and material use, this floor lamp is a testimony to Art Deco Italian decorative creations. The design was unveiled in 1933 and was manufactured until 1938, resulting in a restricted quantity of this lamp being produced. The translucent stem is executed in glass, a material that Buzzi frequently used for his works of art, and decorated with gold leaf. The ribbed stem is divided into three sections by brass mounts and gradually widens towards the bottom. The white lampshade evokes the image of a tulip with its gentle, curved outlines and wide body.

The base is impressed with “VENINI MURANO”.

Tomaso Buzzi (1900-1981) was a multi-talented individual, working as an architect, designer, graphic artist, and writer. He was born in Sondrio, Italy, and obtained his degree in architecture from the Politecnico di Milano in 1923. Buzzi underwent professional training under Gio Ponti, with whom he later formed a business partnership. Before graduating, he had already associated himself with the Studio di Sant’Orsola group, which included Ponti, Michele Marelli and Emilio Lancia. The group shared Buzzi’s passionate interest in the revival of classical architecture and artistic craftsmanship, traits evident in the Novecento movement and in Milanese Deco.
