Silvio Cavatorta desk, mahogany, brass, Italy, design 1948-1949

Beautifully shaped desk in mahogany designed by Silvio Cavatorta in the late 1940s. The desk consists of a sleek top, cross shaped stretchers at the back and sides, and two cabinets under the top with tambour doors on left and right side. This design has amazing structure and elegance, and is a very special find.

Silvio Cavatorta (1899-1957) was an Italian designer. His father, Eugenio Cavatorta founded the furniture and upholstery company Cavatorta in 1869. Silvio, one of thirteen children, started working for the family business after the First World War. He was the main designer for the Cavatorta business, the furniture was mainly intended for complete home or business furnishings. During the Second World War Silvio continued to work, even under German occupation. Silvio his son, Franco (born in 1925) studied to be an architect and graduated in 1950. During his university years he completed internships in the studios of Le Corbusier, Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl and Sven Markelius. Franco Cavatorta was the one to introduce the new style, generally defined as 'Swedish', and took it in production in his fathers furniture factory.
