L.J. Verweij for Intima, sideboard, oak, coromandel, The Netherlands, 1920s

This extremely rare cabinet is designed by Dutch designer L.J. Verweij for Intima in the 1920s. Although little has been known about this creator, this design truly showcases his impeccable talent for woodwork and great taste for harmonious compositions. This credenza is designed according to the Amsterdam School principles that rose to prominence in the 1920s. This movement put emphasize on the plasticity of a furniture piece, meaning that artisans focused on the totality of the furniture's shape where construction played a secondary role. They employed conventional artisanal techniques and luxurious materials. This cabinet is a perfect representative of this style, showcasing intricate marquetry and elaborate carvings. The arched-shaped framework is executed in solid oak with coromandel elements functioning as decoration, and which provide more depth to the piece. The door panels can be opened sideways, allowing acces to the four drawers and interior. Encountering a sideboard that is a 100 years old in such perfect state is exceedingly uncommon. Expert craftsmanship, use of rich materials, and complex decorative components, this sideboard will serve as a statement piece in one's interior.
