Antonín Šuman for TON Benches in Bentwood and Fabric
Antonín Šuman for TON, benches, bentwood, fabric upholstery, Czech Republic, 1977
Admirable benches designed by Antonín Šuman and manufactured by TON in the 1970s. The bench features a wonderful bentwood frame. Engraved rings add a subtle detail to the frame. Currently upholstered in a beige fabric, the design has a subtle yet striking composition of colors and textures.
TON was founded after WWII in former Thonet factories and continued with the furniture making tradition set up by Thonet. In the 1960s, TON asked various architects to contribute to research and developments of new designs using the technology of bentwood and leading to new, more contemporary designs.
